Can I have semi naked chocolate wedding cake?

Semi naked wedding cakes have been so popular over the last few years and I can see why. The simple, versatile wedding cake style can be paired with fresh flowers matching your wedding style and fit in effortlessly to most wedding venues and settings.

When clients book a semi naked wedding cake with me the most common question I am asked is “can I have chocolate cake and does it look different if its paired with lighter sponges” The answer is definitely yes! A fully naked cake would of course be visible but a semi naked frosting covers the sponge in a way which means that the cake is only peeking through, therefore it’s virtually impossible to see the colour of the sponge through the frosting. Inside the layers of cake there would still be chocolate buttercream or desired fillings but the outer layer would all be a white frosting. I personally use a whitened white chocolate ganache for my semi naked cakes as I like how it holds up in heat, is very stable and can be easily transported.

The only cake flavour which cannot be incorporated into a semi naked cake is traditional fruit cake. This needs to be covered in marzipan and fondant icing so is a different style all together. I have in the past incorporated fruit cake by having the bottom tier iced and the top two or three tiers semi naked and this can work well depending on the cake design that you’d like.

Another question I get asked a lot is “do I have to have the cake flavours in a particular order” Personally I don’t find that any of my cake flavours are heavier than other and I dowel all of my cakes with multiple dowels plus a central dowel so this isn’t an issue for me. You can have and flavour in any order.

I hope that’s been helpful, do feel free to ask me any questions in the comments box, I’m always happy to help.
